"Shut up!" yelled Jamie, grabbing a bunch of Ellie's long blond hair in each hand and yanking it hard. .Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!.

Stepbrother and stepsister Jamie and Ellie don't like each other. But when they find themselves in the Jungle, among the colourful Rainbow Monkeys and the mysterious Secrets, they have to work together to help the desperate Rainbows find food before they starve. The Secrets have more than enough coconuts, but they're not going to share them without a battle...

Will the children stop the fighting and save the hungry Rainbows? Evil Shadow and his gang are determined that they won't. And that's when things get dangerous.....

Calling all parents, teachers and children!

The Rainbows and the Secrets is an exciting adventure story for 7-11 year-olds, but there's more to it than that. This book can help your children learn about relationships. The book is about how we communicate with each other: how bad communication can make people angry with us, and unwilling to cooperate; how good communication can get them on our side, and even create a situation in which everybody wins. It is about respecting, listening to and trying to understand each other and learning to live harmoniously together. It touches on difficult subjects, like death and what happens afterwards, without being morbid or frightening.

It provides plenty of material for discussion, games and activities.

If you want to know more, read the plot plan (but don't show the children, it'll spoil the story.)

And here’s a chance to read chapter one

About the Author

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist, and also teach classes in personal development. I have a lot of interest in non-violent communication. In my work I've come across some children, and more adults, who habitually get into a mess because of the way they communicate. I wanted to write a book to show children that it matters how you communicate with other people. But I didn't want the story to be boring or to sound like an improving moral tale, so I’ve tried to make it exciting, and let the characters speak for themselves. I also have four children of my own, all far too grown up now to behave like monkeys, plus six grandchildren, and still counting...
